Reading & Writing Tutoring

Reading and Writing Program- for all ages!

A Plus has a fantastic reading and writing program.

We typically begin with a battery of diagnostic assessments- to determine the students current levels and areas that are of concern.  This diagnostic assessment takes about 1.5 hours and is administered by the Director and founder-Denise J. Mastro.  Denise will assess the student in a 1:1 setting.  This assessment period allows the Director to get a sense of what is going on with the student in areas that extend beyond the basic test scores.  For example focus, self esteem, anxiety, insecurity, are all important factors for some students.  Denise will personally take the extra steps to a comfortable experience so both student and parent are on-board with the process,  and additional help.  Students are treated with respect, using positive reinforcement to bring out the best in their abilities.

The Reading Program for all ages!– is a 3:1 student to teacher ratio.  Students are working on a variety of learning activities.  Each activity takes about 12-15 minutes. Students are first taught the skills in a 1:1 ratio and then asked to practice the skills they learned.  When students complete an activity the teacher scores it and asks the student to  try to self-correct what was wrong.  If the student is not able to self-correct the mistake the teacher will then review it one on one.

All students in the Reading Program receive 1:1 individual instruction for a minimum of 15-20 minutes in the area of vocabulary, reading fluency or both. Students rotate to different instructors for one-on-one instruction to offer variety, and to ensure they are engaged.  The Director, Denise Mastro, works with all students to spot check skills that are mastered and current levels.  Curriculum is customized each and every session to ensure that the session time is productive and effective.

Students spend an average of 15 minutes per session on the computer.  Speed reading, decoding (phonics), vocabulary, and comprehension are  improved with this routine rotation to a 15 minute computer based activity.  Students are spending a maximum of 15 minutes per session on the computer.  Our individualized instruction based program brings student and teacher together 45 minutes each session.

Writing Program- for all ages!

A Plus Master Tutoring Center has a fantastic writing program.  We begin with sentence and paragraph structure.  We teach students how to build onto a simple sentence properly in a controlled fashion.  We quickly work to paragraph structure and onto a 5 Paragraph paper.  A diagnostic assessment is seldom required in the area of writing if a student is already in the Reading Program.

Vocabulary is key to the ability to write properly.  Students of all ages have extreme anxiety when writing.  When students have a limited word-bank it is difficult to articulate one’s thoughts or views on paper.  When we improve vocabulary writing becomes easy as the words flow from our thoughts to the paper.

Students who are entering the Center for Writing will require a diagnostic assessment to determine vocabulary levels, and current levels of proficiency.
